I wonder what would go through Robert Downey Jr’s mind if he saw these… Would he be offended or laugh as hard as I did?
I have the weirdest boner right now.

The Malcolm Sex Roller Derby Blog: The Great Derby Social 2012 1-28 through 1-29-2012
The Great Derby Social 2012, was sponsored by the Greatview Roller Rink and greatderbygear.com, raised money for Dartmouth Hitchcock’s Norris Cotton Cancer Center, and occurred on January 28 and 29, 2012 at the sponsoring rink.
I was not there for the first day, so I really am just speaking…
I agree and disagree with a few points here.
The price was definitely way too high for what little derby related activities there were. Last year we had a lot of the rink to ourselves and were able to just screw around and have a good time. This year we had a few 2 hour sessions devoted to derby scrimmages and had 4 hour blocks of free skate thrown in there. Free skate is fine on it’s own but you are throwing in a bunch of derby skaters who want to do what we do.When you get a group of us on a track together, we see it as a time to basically screw around as well as honing our speed and abilities. Derby skaters like to go fast, juke around skaters, and get a good hit or two in when the others have pads. For the most part though, these free skates were filled by locals (I have no problem with that, we were taking over the rink), but mostly local children. This presents a new set of rules we have to follow. No going fast, no weaving, no hitting, no whipping, no pushing. This is pretty much what we do. The inability for us to do any of that takes a big portion of the reason for the event away.
If there was more derby related time allotted in the schedule, the price would be more justifiable. The money does get donated to a good cause though and I’m happy enough to be supporting a cancer research foundation and getting some skating in though.
The other issue I had was the same as one of Malcolms. That would be the issue of scheduling. The issues with scheduling occurred the first day as well.I’m going to attribute a big part of the attendance to the lack of derby events. This caused an issue with the scrimmages that were taking place. Not only was it difficult to find skaters to participate in the single sex scrimmages, it was even worse trying to find refs.
I head refereed all of the scrimmages on the first day as well as the ECDD vs. CVRD scrimmage the second day and I can only describe it as painful. For all except one of my scrimmages the first day I had at most 4 referees. And they were either very new/unsure of what to do or they had some idea what they were doing but confusing the ones that didn’t.
Along with the lack of refs, came a lack of other officials. I found myself reffing and doing jam timing more than once. I was lucky enough that during the men’s scrimmage that I didn’t end up jam reffing, head ref duties and doing jam timing as well.
The only thing I slightly disagree with is the issue about the Jam skaters. The event as I read it was supposed to be a mix of jam skating and derby activities. This is fine because it spreads the mix between two different groups and introduces people to a new set. However, it was marketed and promoted more towards derby people as well as going by the name Great Derby Social. That being said, I had no problem with it being mixed and in fact there was far far less Jam skating exhibition than there was derby. I’d say in total between the two days, the jam skaters got maybe an hour of spotlight whereas derby had around maybe 12 between the two days.
Another reason that I wasn’t too miffed by the jam skaters is because out of the three people from Vanilla Skates that were brought in (Tony Zane, Hunter Collins, and Drew Peacock) Drew Peacock is a derby skater for the Magic City Misfits. Drew showed some impressive skills and abilities on the track and it was good to see moves that we could all learn and benefit from. On top of that Tony Zane is a potential convert to the Derby world now after seeing everything we had to offer in the scrimmages from the first night.
All in all, the event did lack in substance and that saddens me. I hope that if this event does go on next year, then mistakes will be learned from and some things changed up. Let’s have more derby clinics, more derby skating, and more ability to take over the rink and really have a good time with our derby friends. If the event is named the Great Derby Social, then I expect a bit more derby out of it. We can all hope and dream.
UPDATE: Apparently Hunter Collins has a bit of Derby in him as well. I was so exhausted from the weekend that I failed to notice that he played in the scrimmages and was pretty amazing at it at that.

Watch out England
It’s slightly over 50 days until I hop back on a plane and skivvy off across the pond to visit myloveisshared.tumblr.com. It’s safe to say that I can’t wait!

It would be safe to assume that I just snorted at this.
